Carpentry Apprenticeship Program

• NCFC supports a special project in a community center in "Sutyaba" neighborhood of Leon which teaches advance carpentry skills to young people as an alternative to selling drugs or becoming drug users. The school offers classes on weekdays and weekends

• Students learn carpentry skills working on furniture like rocking chairs, cribs, dressers, and tables for student's projects.

• Fifteen students graduated from the school in November 2006. Next year, the school hopes to start more aggressively marketing their wood produces and will apply to the City of Leon to become a micro-enterprise.

NCFC supports this program with the following:
• Materials and equipment used in the shop - Until NCFC began supporting this project, the school lacked money to replace old equipment or buy pieces needed for more finished work. Some months the school lacked wood and students were turned away.

• Pays for monthly stipend for the school’s teacher.
